Article Footnotes and Contents

Long articles have traditionally been a little clunky to interact with in Serial. Now, articles with references or footnotes will show them inline next to the content, making them much easier to view.

Tables of Contents are also available for articles, hidden by default – hover your mouse at the left side of the screen to jump between article headings.

Both features can be enabled/disabled in the article appearance settings.

Improved Feed Adding and Management

The experience of adding feeds has been streamlined - feeds are searched for and found in a new command palette:

The biggest changes come in the edit feed dialog – assigning views and tags are now as simple as toggling the ones you want (as opposed to wrestling with a popover UI).

When you select a view, tags that appear as view subsections will be highlighted at the front of the tags list. This makes it much easier to know which tags will actually affect the feed’s placement in the view section.

- VITE_PUBLIC_*-prefixed variables will continue to remain backwards-compatible for the foreseeable future, but are no longer the recommended pattern

Added a dev:demo command to quickly spin up test environments locally
Added robust random port spin up scripts to allow for running tests and dev servers in multiple concurrent sessions without conflicting with each other

Breaking changes

Any shortcuts to www.serial.tube should be updated to use app.serial.tube.
If you use the Serial PWA, you should reinstall from the app.serial.tube site.

View sections

What are view sections?

It’s often useful to organize your RSS content from most read (blogs from friends, paid newsletters) to least read (general news headlines you skim), as discussed in this excellent Molly White blogpost. This can be difficult in a general-purpose reader, as this kind of system often necessitates multiple views for each kind of content you’d like to group – you might end up with views like “Important News” and “News Headlines” instead of one curated “News” view. View sections give you an additional tool to maintain that top-level grouping while having control of the internal organization.

Some example use cases for view sections include:

In a “News” view, surfacing specific publications or tags first and pushing more noisy or firehose-like feeds to the bottom
In a “Subscriptions” view, highlighting a set of channels tagged “First” at the top and showing other less important or longform videos later
In a “Music” view, splitting out news publications from music videos (e.g., separating a music criticism site’s reviews from NPR Tiny Desk performances)

Adding view sections

View dialogs have been updated to separate view content from view display settings. Here’s what editing view sections looks like in that “Display” tab:

Starting with this release, you can add sections to your views based on a given feed or tag. Drag and drop these sections to adjust their order. You can match any tag that exists on a feed in that view, regardless of if that tag has been explicitly added to the view or not.

In addition, you can set a custom layout for each view section, or mirror the base view layout with Default. Some layout options you might consider are:

In a “News” view, showing important items in a Large List layout while keeping headlines in a more compact, standard List layout.
In a “Subscriptions” view, showing videos from your favorite channels in a Large Grid layout while keeping general subscriptions in a more traditional Grid layout
In a “Music” view, showing music criticism sites in a list-style layout and performance videos in a grid-style layout (to better separate between the types of content)

Additional features of view sections

Each view section comes with a “Mark as read” button. Group commonly triaged or read content together to bulk archive it in one go. Hit f to mark a selected section as read, or Shift + F to mark all content in a view as read.
View sections are persisted through OPML exports and imports. If you ever move off of the main serial instance to a self-hosted one or vice versa, your sections will transfer too. This should also work for other RSS readers, although Serial-specific concepts like layouts will not transfer.

A new chapter for Serial

A note about subscriptions

Starting today (May 5th, 2026), Serial will begin to offer paid plans on the primary instance. This is a decision made with the goal of of being able to sustainably create open-source software that is built to last, and will help to support both current costs and future development.

The new pricing was chosen to support all kinds of people, from those who just want a nice interface for a few feeds to users who want a single app for all their web content. The pricing is designed to give more price flexibility than many RSS readers on the market, and should be an especially good middle ground for those who are not “RSS power users” but still want the benefits of a well-supported and designed reader.

This pricing only applies to the main instance; self-hosted instances will always be free to run. I’ll be writing additional guides on data export and self-hosting throughout the month to make sure this is a real option for all kinds of people, not just those who are technical or self-hosting hobbyists. If you’d like to try this today, you can follow the existing step-by-step guide here.

Even if you don’t upgrade today, your current feeds will stay active through (at least) June 1st. If you have any questions at all, don’t hestiate to reach out. I know it’s a tough time for many right now, and I never want ability to pay to be the reason someone can’t use Serial.

Progress towards a more “local-first” experience

Serial now caches local data on desktop and PWA (progressive web app) installations.
Initial loads should feel much snappier, especially when going to read or watch previously added items.

Feed data caching

Feeds are now cached in the user’s KV store of choice up until that feed’s ttl. In practicality, this means that popular and recently fetched feeds will be retreived faster when fetched again by someone else.

Background feed streaming

For users that have feeds that refresh in the background, Serial will stream new data in to the application automatically when the app is open.

Background Refresh

Background refresh is now available for self-hosted instances. This will automatically fetch new content for your feeds as it becomes available, instead of requiring you to wait on startup to fetch new content.
This can be enabled with BACKGROUND_REFRESH_ENABLED=true in your environment variables.

Feed activity

Added the ability to disable/enable feeds. This allows you to keep feeds in your feed list, but prevent new content from being fetched (until turned back on)

Desktop actions now only appear on hover, giving more space to page content

Self hosting & feed management

Added true self-hosting support

Serial has been “self hostable” for a while, but only through the libsql host Turso. Turso is a great service if you’re looking to run Serial at scale, but most people are not. You now can run Serial entirely locally, while still leveraging some of the performance benefits of libsql.

In addition, there is now updated self-hosting documentation for a handful of platforms:

Vercel (only hostable through Turso)
Coolify (hostable through either).

Added a dedicated feed management page

Dealing with lots of feeds in Serial can be cumbersome, so there is now a much more efficient feed management page accessible through the feeds sidebar (or at this link). This page allows you to:

Bulk remove any number of feeds
Clear the categories from any number of feeds
Edit the categories for any number of feeds

Improvements

Better PWA support
- While not perfect, this should allow for reading articles in gaps between service (e.g. while on a train)
Updated toast location on mobile to avoid annoying UI overlap between the toast and bottom sheets
Better data fetching/revalidation right after an .opml import

Instapaper Integration & Feed Discovery

Other notes

Serial now uses Tanstack Start as a base framework instead of Next.js, which better reflects the more client-side identity of the app. This was holding up new feature work a little bit, so things should be much smoother sailing going forward.

In addition, there was a lot of cleanup done to data fetching (again) – this is hopefully in the home stretch.

Hey all! This is by far the biggest update for Serial since they’ve been tracked.

This update introduces views, a new way to customize your feed. Views allow you to combine a selection of filters (currently, time and categories) to create custom feeds for your Serial home page. This is the first step is finding ways to combat “content whiplash”, or that feeling you get when you try to parse through the videos you watch to relax mixed into videos about current news or politics.

This release brings the first support for bulk importing feeds into Serial! There is still more progress to be made (namely, in bringing in categories when importing) but this should be a great first step for many users.

- This is the format provided by Google when exporting your subscriptions via Google Takeout.
Add support for importing OPML files
- This is the most popular format used by RSS readers. If you follow YouTube channels in an RSS reader currently, this is likely the export format it provides.

- Filter videos with the category bar at the bottom of the page
  - Tip: The bottom categories will be grayed out if no videos match the selected filters. This should make it easy to stay on top of lots of categories!
